The Basics

The Berchtesgaden salt mines can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Exploring the salt mines is a blast for the whole family. At Berchtesgaden, visitors can tour the mines by train, brave a 118-foot-long (36-meter-long) miners’ slide, cruise across a subterranean salt lake (the “Mirror Lake”), and marvel at the Salt Cathedral. At the Hallstatt salt mines, visitors can walk through underground tunnels, learn about the science of salt in a subterranean classroom, see a prehistoric wooden staircase (the oldest of its kind in the world!), and shop for innovative salt products in the gift shop. Journey to the mines on a half- or full-day tour from Salzburg, Austria, or Munich, Germany.

Amazing tour and sights. A great introduction to the region.
This was an excellent tour of the region, well organised and friendly knowledgable guide. Eagles nest was amazing and we were lucky with the weather. The salt mines has prohibited photography but very interesting. Berchtesgaden we visited again the following day, lovely scenery and shops, food was excellent. Konigsee was the final part and has some stunning views, the boat trips are a couple of hours so will be going again for these

Skip the salt mine part

Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip
SOM Tour was cool and we enjoyed the guide. We would not recommend the salt mine & mountain part. The salt mine was very gimmicky and a waste of time. They had a few facts along the way and herded a huge group through walkways with little information or interesting sites. You can’t take pictures so they can make you buy theirs.

Salzburg Super Saver: Bavarian Mountains including Eagle's Nest and Salt Mines
Must do! Eagles Nest (up with the original elevator), snacks in Berchtesgaden, Salt Mines (includes train and slides inside the mine) and Königssee (had time for a boat ride on the lake). Very informative, very well organised. Absolutely recommend it!!!!!!

Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg
This was a great tour! The ride is about 45 minutes to the salt mines - but note these are not the Austrian salt mines. They are in Germany. The salt mines tour is about an hour and 15 minutes and very interesting, and then there’s some free time in a Bavarian town. Our tour guide recommended a wonderful cafe for apple strudel and tea.

Be prepared for bad weather. I came here in August hoping to avoid weather like that, but it rained and was cloudy. Other than that, it was a great experience.

Very knowledgeable guide, small group during COVID was an advantage and gave us more time to explore the sites. This is the best time to travel and tour!

Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg
We had the best time on this Salt Mine Tour! Our party of 5 adults loved suiting up, riding the small train, sliding down the wood slides and traveling over the brine water by barge. We loved the slides so much that we wish we could have gone down more. We all commented on how this kind of tour would never pass codes for the US, as it is fast, fun and without many safety barriers. We highly recommend for everyone!

We ended up not doing this exact...

Salzburg Super Saver: Austrian Lakes, Mountains and Salt Mines
We ended up not doing this exact tour because Eagle's Nest had just opened two days before. We were ablw to switch to that tour with some additional cost. It was an amazing day! The sky was clean and the sun was shining. The views fromthe Eagle's Nest are some of the most spectacular we have ever seen. We enjoyed the salt mine tour and the quaint village of Berchtesgaden, Germany and King Lake.

The Tour is very good at Christmas...

Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg
The Tour is very good at Christmas time especially the stop at Berchtesgaden. The salt mine is good too, but beware, they do not allow you to take any of your own photos, or video in the mine as they use safety as a reason. But frankly I think its more to do with selling you the photos they take as you go round....

Salzburg Super Saver: Austrian Lakes, Mountains and Salt Mines
As others have said, these are 2 different trips. The morning was spent exploring the salt mines on a train, a slide and a raft - great fun! The afternoon trip to lake Wolfgang was beautiful. Quaint little villages and stunning scenery.

What an amazing selection of tours to fill a perfect day! First, the weather was absolutely perfect which offered amazing views from the Eagles Nest and Bavarian Alps. Our guide, Walter, was an excellent narrator and story teller and had such a great sense of humor. Moving from one aspect of the tours to the next event was seamless. We had plenty of time to have lunch and shop in Berchtesgaden. The salt mine tour was incredible with an awesome train deep into the mine and also two super fun slides miners use to get down many levels of the mine. We even road a boat across a clear under ground lake. This really is a great tour that should not be missed.

Salzburg Super Saver: Bavarian Mountains including Eagle's Nest and Salt Mines
This trip was worth the money. We did the full day trip and we enjoyed our Guide Walter, he was knowledgeable and funny. We enjoyed skipping the lines at the Eagles nest (be sure to have cash they don't accept credit cards). Lunch felt rushed the recommended restaurant took too long to serve us, we barely finished our food. The kids (8,10,18) really enjoyed the salt mines. One of the workers at the gift shop refused to let us in because we weren't wearing FFP2 masks while she was not wearing one either -when I mentioned it she got very rude and said she could cause she worked there! Don't understand her logic but I'm probably better off without their overpriced tourist crap anyway. Ended the tour at kings lake-just beautiful! I'd definitely recommend this tour!!

Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg
The tour was a ton of fun. My wife and I had a lot of fun in the mines. We stopped in Berchtesgaden for a coffee/snack break after the mines. It is a very nice little old town. Our tour guide Michelle was great and we enjoyed ourselves the whole time.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The salt mines can only be visited on guided tours, and it’s best to book in advance, especially during high season in July and August.

  • Wear warm clothes and comfortable shoes, as it can be chilly underground. Overalls and protective clothing are provided for most tours.

  • Some parts of the salt mine tours are wheelchair accessible, but it’s best to check with your tour operator in advance.

Most salt mines are open year-round, but fewer tour times are usually available in low season. July and August are the most popular months to visit; during this time it’s a good idea to book an early time slot to avoid crowds.

Combo Tours with the Salzburg Salt Mines

Salt mine excursions are often combined with a trip to Adolf Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest atop a sub-peak of Hoher Göll mountain, or a boat cruise around Lake Königssee in Germany. Alternatively, opt for a private tour to Hallstatt and discover the underground world of the Hallstatt salt mines, ride the funicular—a steep cable railway—to the Five Fingers Viewing Platform at Krippenstein, or take a boat tour of Hallstatt Lake.
