The Basics

Three of the mine's nine levels are open to visitors. Explore these upper areas and see underground lakes, pits and chambers that have been made into detailed chapels, and an array of statues and monuments, all carved from salt. The mine's claim to fame is its ornate Chapel of St. Kinga, made entirely of salt—from the chandeliers to the altarpieces—over the course of 30 years.

Wieliczka is a popular site for travelers to Krakow, often visited on a half-day trip with a tour guide or combined with a trip to the nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

Wieliczka Salt Mine: Regular Guided Tour (free door to door service)
We were picked up promptly by a very courteous driver, who gave us tips on where to visit, eat etc. The salt mine is certainly a must do when in Krakow. The Kings chamber is a sight to behold.

Wieliczka Salt Mine Guided Tour with pickup
Good tor with interesting and light hearted information from the guide. Lots of historical and geological facts. The tour involves a fair amount of walking and alot of steps so a level of fitness is probably required. The only negative is the elevator ride backup is very cramped but it was only for a minute.

Wieliczka Salt Mine Guided Tour with pickup
Salt mines were good. Comfy walking shoes are a must. Lots of steps down and a bit of a cramped lift back up. Worth the visit. However transfers with Gr8way, late picking us up at both ends. Blamed on the traffic, seems to be a thing with them. Why not allow extra time if it's busy?

Really, really good interesting trips. Very good tour guider from start to finish. Excellent English, pick up and drop off near hotel. The trips can be a little cold so wrap up well.

Combined: Auschwitz Birkenau and Salt Mine private chauffeur from Krakow
Having a chatty and friendly guide with personalised explanations and timelines was very reassuring. Combining Auschwitz and the Salt Mines resulted in a very full day but certainly 'doable'. Both well with the visit. Guide dropped us off at a restraunt instead of our hotel after so we had no evening hassle too.

A very well organized day. Driver got us where we needed to be, never waited in line and found us a nice lunch place. A great way to get a lot done in a day if in Krakow.

Day Trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine from Krakow including Lunch
The tour guide at Aushwitz was incredible as well as the salt cave. Great driver, but the lunch was sub-standard, it consisted of a salad and an apple....

Salty Sites Around the World

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is far from the world's only salty attraction. In Bolivia, the famed Salar de Uyuni salt flats are the largest in the world—and seemingly made for trick photography opportunities—while Peru's Maras salt pans in the Sacred Valley are also a sight to behold. Meanwhile, in Israel, you can float in the salt-sodden waters of the Dead Sea, before zipping over to Colombia for a visit to the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral.
