The Basics

The Zaanse Schans is a popular day-trip destination from Amsterdam, and the scenic drive through the Dutch countryside is a tour highlight in and of itself. Visit on a half- or full-day tour to explore the five Dutch Golden Age windmills and visit the workshops of local craftspeople.

When you get hungry, pop into a bakery for a taste of the sweet white duivekater bread, head to the cheese factory for some famous Edam cheese, or step inside Albert Heijn—the village’s oldest shop—for a bag of sweets. A boat trip or a canal cruise is another excellent way to see the Zaanse Schans and the surrounding villages.

Wonderful morning!
Glorious morning out in Zaanse Schans, with just 7 fellow companions and Callum, our great guide, who was extremely kind, well prepared and so fun to be with! Typical windmills to see and visit, lots of interesting sights and things to learn. Delicious cheese tasting (You can also buy cheese and souvenirs but nobody forces You to do so) and entertaining clog making demonstration. A great way to spend a few hours and it's just a 20-minutes drive from Amsterdam. Great spots for pictures! Very good value for money, as well. Strongly recommended!

Zaanse Schans Small-Group Half-Day Tour from Amsterdam
We enjoyed this tour, it was lovely and instructive. Our guide Paul paid attention to our questions and needs. He was very kind. We would have missed something if we had travelled to Amsterdam without going to Zaanse Schans.

Giethoorn and Zaanse Schans Windmills Small-Group Day Trip from Amsterdam
Nice cross-section of Dutch history and countryside and personalized story telling. The Netherlands is a country living on the edge of water, beside and below. And the tour shows how that beautiful relationship works.

This was a really enjoyable and chilled trip. There was only three of us on the tour and it was really well paced. There was a good mixture of guided time and free time. The guide was excellent and certainly knew his stuff.

Day Trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
The tour guide was brilliant and informative. Knew how to capture his audience. Apart from the tour, he gave helpful tips about which shops to avoid to save money and the best areas to visit in Amsterdam. He made jokes and got us all laughing.

Giethoorn and Zaanse Schans Windmills Small-Group Day Trip from Amsterdam
Said was awesome! Our tour began with Said picking us up at our hotel which saved us from figuring out transportation to the original pick up spot. He then drove us to Zaanse schans to tour of windmills, cheese store, and wooden shoe demonstration. All were very interesting. Then we went to Giethoorn and it was a delightful town. We had a delicious lunch, ice cream snack and a fun canal cruise! Said was there to meet any needs we had. We would highly recommend him for future tours!

Day Trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
This trip was absolutely amazing! Our guide Laura is a super knowledgeable person and has really valuable information about the culture and landmarks. She was extremely nice and had great energy. The ladies at the farm were really funny and great at what they do. I was very happy with this tour. I only suggest to let people walk a little longer in the two towns where we are given free time. Overall, this was a great trip and I recommend it 100%.

Windmill village experience was magical. Koen was a great guide. Very cool trip to Giethoorn, a neat town with no cars.

Things to Know Before You Go

When to Get There

Though there's plenty to do year-round in the Zaanse Schans, much of the village’s charm lies in its outdoor attractions, making late spring and summer the best times to visit. Winters in the Netherlands are known to be rainy and windy, so if you’re visiting then, wear warm layers under a waterproof jacket.

The Dutch and Their Bicycles

It’s said that there are 1.5 bicycles for every inhabitant of the Netherlands. The Dutch love their bikes and can be found pedaling them to work, school, the grocery store, and everywhere else in between. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see Holland like a local. In summer, a bike tour from Amsterdam to the Zaanse Schans is a popular way to experience the quaint village and the bucolic countryside.
